Scenario A: You Own One or Two Machines and Downtime Is Brutal
This is the single-machine owner or small contractor. You've got a Bomag compactor—maybe a BT60, maybe a BMP 8500—and when it's down, you're not making money. You're also not buying enough volume to get meaningful wholesale pricing, and you know it.
My honest take for this group: stop optimizing for unit price. Optimize for getting the right part, fast, with a paper trail.

Track roller sourcing is where I see the most shortcuts taken and the most regret afterward. I still kick myself for not documenting a verbal spec confirmation on one of our first wholesale orders. The vendor claimed a Rockwell hardness that, when we finally tested it, was two points below what they'd said. If I'd gotten it in writing with a batch reference, we'd have had grounds to dispute the whole shipment. Instead we ate it.
For wholesale buyers, the discipline that matters is verification at intake, not at dispute. Sample testing. Photo documentation against the catalog. Serialized tracking. It feels bureaucratic until the day it saves you $40,000, and then it feels cheap.
On the pricing side—I'm cautious about publishing "average" wholesale numbers because they move constantly and vary wildly by region and volume tier. What I can say is that compactor wholesale pricing in most markets as of early 2025 runs roughly 30-45% below single-unit retail for verified buyers, with the spread narrowing sharply below twenty units per order. Verify current numbers with actual quotes before you build a business case on any published figure.
How to Tell Which Scenario You're Actually In
Most buyers know which bucket they're in. But I've seen people misclassify themselves in both directions—single-machine owners trying to negotiate like distributors, and mid-size fleets paying retail because they never asked about tiered pricing.
Quick check: if a single wrong part costs you more than 5% of your monthly revenue in downtime, you're in Scenario A regardless of how many machines you technically own. If you have parts sitting in inventory because you bought "just in case," you're probably bending toward Scenario B. And if your purchase decision depends more on resale margin than on operational continuity, you're in Scenario C.
One more thing—and this is the part that took me years to internalize: a supplier who tells you "this isn't our strength, here's who handles it better" is worth more than one who claims to cover everything. Anyone promising to be your one-stop shop for compactors, graders, pavers, AND every BT65 part variant is either enormous or bluffing. Specialists who know their limits have consistently earned my trust for everything else.
Pick your scenario honestly, then build your sourcing around it. The cost guide that works for a distributor will bankrupt an owner-operator, and vice versa. That's not a dodge—that's the actual answer.
