Technical Trade-offs Buyers Still Debate

Road-compaction procurement rarely has a single “correct” machine. These two debates show up on almost every Bomag applications call — we present both sides so your bid meeting can defend the choice.

Vibratory Tandem vs. Pneumatic Tire Roller

Vibratory side: Dual-amplitude drums (0.4 / 0.8 mm at 50 / 60 Hz) rearrange particles from the bottom up. Operating mass in the 10–14 t class with static line load around 28–33 kg/cm densifies binder and granular base before the mat cools below 120°C. One double-drum unit covers more of a highway overlay budget when the bid only funds a single intermediate machine.

Pneumatic side: Overlapping tires knead from the top down and close surface voids on SMA, airport friction courses and wearing courses where steel drums alone leave open texture. Tire pressure and wheel load are the controlling specs — not centrifugal force in kN — so a PT-class 16–24 t unit often follows tandem breakdown rather than replacing it.

Practical call: Highway specs that cite sealed surface texture usually want both in sequence. If budget forces one purchase, start with the vibratory tandem and rent a pneumatic tire roller for the wearing-course week.

High Compaction Force Soil Drum vs. Thin Asphalt Amplitude

High-force side: Single-drum soil compactors with higher compaction force (kN) and thicker lift plans suit embankments, crusher pads and mining haul roads measured against ASTM D698 / D1557. Deeper particle rearrangement shortens pass counts on granular fills where nuclear-gauge or sand-cone checks sit at the lift mid-depth.

Low-amplitude side: On 40–50 mm hot-mix wearing courses, the same high centrifugal force can crush aggregate and open surface checking. Drop to ~0.4 mm amplitude or static finish once mat temperature falls, and keep drum edges off curb within 150 mm.

Practical call: Match force and amplitude to lift thickness and material — not to the largest kN number on a brochure. Bomag quotes list the intended lift window next to the machine class so the engineer of record can reject a mismatch before PO.

Operating Boundaries We Disclose Up Front

  • Saturated waterworks lifts: Over-amplitude on wet embankment fills can shear the lift; moisture-aware lift thickness and lower frequency come before chasing maximum compaction force.
  • Night urban closures: Cab noise must stay inside ISO 6395 site limits; beacon and lighting kits help, but façade vibration monitors may still cap pass speed near occupied towers.
  • Parts distance: Sites more than a day from a regional hub should stock drum scrapers, isolators and spray nozzles before the first paving week — twelve-hour field response assumes a contracted corridor near hub inventory.
  • Emission paperwork: Tier 4 Final / Stage V serial logs cover current production; older relocation units need a separate conformity review before they enter an EPA-sensitive bid package.
