Road Equipment FAQ — Answers from Application Engineers

Compaction frequency, drum width, Tier 4 Final paperwork and lead times — written for procurement managers comparing vibratory rollers and asphalt compactors.

Equipment Selection

What is the right roller type for compacting hot-mix asphalt?

For a standard hot-mix overlay, stage a three-pass train: double-drum vibratory breakdown while the mat stays at or above 140°C, pneumatic tire roller for kneading seal, then static finish on the tandem drums. Keep the breakdown unit within 15–30 m of the paver screed so amplitude work happens before the mix stiffens below 120°C.

How do I choose between a vibratory roller and a pneumatic tire roller?

Vibratory rollers rearrange particles from the bottom up with eccentric force — ideal for granular base and binder breakdown. Pneumatic tire rollers knead from the top down, closing surface voids on wearing courses, SMA and airport pavements. Most highway specs want both in sequence; if budget allows only one machine, the double-drum vibratory is the more versatile first purchase.

What drum width do I need for a 3.75 m lane?

A 2.0 m drum typically covers the lane in two overlapped passes; a 1.5 m drum needs three. Edge zones within 150 mm of curb usually need a smaller tandem or plate compactor so the main roller never rides the drainage structure.

Technical & Compliance

What does compaction force (kN) mean on a soil compactor?

Centrifugal force describes how hard the eccentric mass hits the drum each revolution. Higher kN helps densify thick granular lifts, but on thin asphalt wearing courses excessive force can crush aggregate. Match force and amplitude to lift thickness and material — our applications desk will map your nuclear-gauge target to a class.

Do machines meet EPA Tier 4 Final / EU Stage V?

Current production rollers and pavers ship Tier 4 Final / Stage V with DPF + SCR aftertreatment. We issue NOx and PM logs per serial number for bid packages that require emission evidence beside CE 2006/42/EC declarations.

What hydraulic cleanliness do you ship at?

We target ISO 4406 18/16/13 at factory fill for vibration and propel circuits. Commissioning includes a sample pull so your maintenance team has a baseline before the first paving week.

Procurement & Lead Time

What is the typical PO-to-site window?

Standard tandem rollers: 10–14 weeks ex-works plus a commissioning week. Asphalt pavers with electric-heat screeds: 14–18 weeks including trailer and foundation review. Expedite slots depend on drum and engine availability at the regional hub.

Can you support custom drum widths or tropical cooling packs?

Yes. Custom engineering covers wider drums, high-ambient cooling, airport lighting kits and salt-fog scrapers. Lead time adds two to four weeks depending on fabrication load — confirm during quote.
