If you're buying a BOMAG compactor based on sticker price, you're not making a purchasing decision—you're guessing. You can find a low quote in under an hour. Understanding why it's low takes a little longer.
I've been managing equipment and parts procurement since 2020 for a mid-sized utility contractor. I process roughly $400,000 a year in orders across eight vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. I didn't always think this way. I learned the hard way.
In my first year, I ordered replacement parts for a BOMAG compactor from a supplier whose quote came in $735 lower than the authorized dealer. I didn't ask why. I didn't check whether they carried serial-number-specific parts. I just saw a lower number and placed the order. The parts didn't fit. The invoice was a handwritten receipt. It's tempting to think that two compactors with similar drum width and engine power will deliver similar lifetime costs. That ignores the parts, the support, and the way a machine fits the job cycle. I saw this when we replaced our old compactor for a transfer station. The operations manager and I looked at a compact model and a heavier production model. The compact model was about 18% cheaper on the base quote, which got finance's attention. But the machine would run every shift, and the smaller unit needed more passes to hit the same density. More passes meant more fuel, more operator hours, and more wear per ton of material.
The base quote also didn't include the cost of the smaller machine working harder. Higher operating temperatures, faster wear on bushings, more frequent greasing. Those are maintenance numbers, not purchase numbers. They show up in the maintenance log before they show up on a P&L.
I'm not an equipment engineer, so I can't speak to drum frequency and centrifugal force specs the way a BOMAG sales rep can. What I can do is calculate operating cost per ton handled. That calculation showed the production model's higher upfront price washing out by year three. The plant manager had always said you buy compaction by the ton, not by the unit. The Landfill Compactor Is a Different Beast

The dealer confirmed support coverage, and we factored that into the decision. It wasn't the flashiest line on the quote, but it mattered later.
That's why I now treat dealer support as a line item. It's not a luxury. It's risk reduction that doesn't show up on the initial invoice.
Why I Keep a TCO Checklist Handy
People often assume genuine BOMAG parts cost more because of the logo. I'd argue it's the other way around. The logo is attached after the engineering, testing, and fit validation is done. The price pays for that work. To be fair, there are good independent parts suppliers. I'm not dismissing the whole aftermarket category. But if I have to validate fit, compatibility, and warranty myself, that time has a cost. (Note to self: this is exactly why we keep a small genuine parts reserve.)
This framework also applies beyond compaction. When we reviewed a concrete mixer wholesale quote last year, the lowest unit price came with uncertain parts sourcing and vague delivery dates. On the paving side, a bulk paver order had hidden freight and assembly costs that made the second-lowest quote the real best value. Again, not a criticism of low-quote suppliers—just a request for transparency.
How to Choose Compactor for Wholesale, in My Opinion
If someone asks me how to choose compactor for wholesale, I don't start with the machine. I start with the job cycle, the planned hours, and the support setup around it. Unit price matters—I'm not saying it doesn't. But it's one line in a much longer calculation.
I keep a simple checklist: purchase price, freight, setup, parts lead time, estimated annual downtime cost, operator and fuel cost per operating hour, and expected resale value after five years. When I compare quotes, I compare all of those, not just the first number (which, in my experience, is where the pain hides).
The other thing I look for is whether the supplier can explain their numbers. A salesperson who only talks about price doesn't know the machine's economics. A supplier who asks about your duty cycle, compaction requirements, and parts lead times is giving you something useful.
But What If the Budget Is Tight?
I get it. The cheaper option is sometimes the only option finance will approve. That's a real constraint, and I don't want to sound like someone who's never had to make a spreadsheet balance. But a tight budget is exactly when TCO matters most, because there's no reserve for downtime. If you can't afford a breakdown, you can't afford to guess on parts or support.
Granted, TCO thinking takes time, and you won't always have every number. You estimate. You ask suppliers directly about lead times and total landed cost. Most established suppliers can answer if you push. The ones who can't are telling you something.
If a tight budget forces us down, I at least want a plan for the extra risk. That plan might be a service contract, a parts safety stock, or a faster depreciation schedule. The pain isn't in the purchase. It's in the surprise.
I still compare prices on everything, including BOMAG compactor orders. I just stopped treating the price tag as the final answer. The lowest quote feels good for about a day. A machine that runs reliably for five years feels better for the whole time you own it. That's why I'll keep buying on total cost of ownership—and why I think anyone making wholesale equipment decisions should too.
