How to Choose a Roller Compactor for Wholesale: A Bomag Buyer's Guide
Every week, I get a phone call from someone who needs a Bomag compactor shipped yesterday. Sometimes a machine has just died on site. Instead, answer three questions:
- Where will this machine actually work?
- Who will run it?
- What happens when it breaks?
It's tempting to think you can skip straight to comparing drum widths and engine powers. But two machines with identical spec sheets can behave completely differently in daily use—because of service intervals, water system design, or how easy it is to change a tire.
Scenario 1: You're buying for a rental fleet
If your machine is going to be operated by three different people in the same week, you need toughness before performance. The operator who drags a plate compactor over a curb at 7 a.m. isn't thinking about your drum bearing. They're thinking about finishing their route before lunch.
For most rental fleets, a combination of a Bomag BMP 8500 reversible plate and a small ride-on tandem in the BW 138 AD-3 class is a no-brainer. Not because they're the heaviest machines in the catalog. Because they're hard to kill, and parts are generally straightforward to source through Bomag's dealer network.
Here's the part most wholesale buyers ignore: the spare parts kit. If you're ordering several machines, you need belts, eccentric bearings, and water system filters on hand before the first rental leaves the yard. Trust me on this one. A machine down for two weeks waiting on a $90 part makes the discount from buying in bulk completely irrelevant.
Bottom line: buy for the least careful version of your customer, not for the ideal operator.
Scenario 2: You're an asphalt contractor buying your own fleet
If you're paving parking lots or municipal streets, a Bomag roller compactor's job is to close the mat before it cools. That means acceleration, reverse speed, and water system reliability matter more than static weight.
A small smooth-drum tandem like the BW 138 AD-3 is a good starting point for tight lots and small roads. That's from Bomag's published spec sheets on bomag.com, as of January 2025, at least. For longer haul jobs, move up in the catalog. But don't assume bigger is better. A 10-tonne machine on a thin overlay can tear the mat apart. You need to match vibration amplitude to lift thickness.
People think a heavier roller compacts better. Actually, a roller with the right frequency and amplitude compacts better. Weight helps when you're compacting thick lifts of well-graded aggregate, but it's not the cause of compaction. The surprise isn't that heavy machines exist—it's how often they're the wrong choice for thin asphalt overlays.
If you're also buying a bulk motor grader in the same order, don't let the roller decision become an afterthought. A bulk motor grader should be selected for grading width, engine power, and blade geometry. A roller should be selected for material type and lift thickness. They're different machines with different problems. Bundling them for freight savings is fine, but the roller isn't a throw-in item.
Scenario 3: You're doing site prep, earthworks, or landfill work
This is where the catalog gets dangerous. A landfill compactor looks like a roller, but it's not. It has a different drum design and a much stronger frame. If you buy a standard soil compactor and put it on a transfer station, you'll spend more time cleaning drums and fixing tires than compacting.

If a dealer can't show you a parts sourcing plan for the models you want, that's a red flag. Lack of dealer support is a deal-breaker, no matter how good the price looks.
In March 2024, a contractor called at 6:30 p.m. needing a replacement roller by 7 a.m. for a lane closure. Normal turnaround was three weeks.
