How to Know Which Scenario You're In
I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a construction equipment distributor. I review every parts order before it reaches customers—roughly 200 line items a year, maybe 180, I'd have to check the system. Scenario 1: Under Warranty or Lease — Buy OEM, No Debate
This one is basically a non-decision. If your Bomag compactor is still under manufacturer warranty, or if you're leasing it under a maintenance agreement, use genuine Bomag parts. End of discussion.
Why? Because warranty terms commonly state that using non-genuine parts may void coverage. I've watched contractors learn that lesson the hard way. One case that stuck with me: a contractor bought a $60 aftermarket hydraulic filter for a BW138 AD-3 tandem roller. The drum vibration system later failed. The dealer flagged the non-genuine filter during the claim inspection, and the warranty claim was denied. A $60 "saving" turned into a repair bill well into four figures.
Whether that's fair is not the point. The manufacturer has documentation, the dealer has documentation, and the part number doesn't match. You've handed them the reason to reject the claim. Under warranty, OEM parts aren't a cost—they're insurance.
Lease agreements work the same way. Most contracts specify OEM maintenance parts to protect the asset's residual value. Deviating from that is asking for a dispute at hand-back time.
Scenario 2: Safety-Critical Components — OEM or Fully Verified Equivalent
Now let's say the machine is out of warranty and the part is safety-critical: a brake caliper, a steering joint, a drum drive motor, a hydraulic hose near the operator station, or a screed lift cylinder on an asphalt paver. This is where "will it fit" is the wrong question.
I learned this the hard way. Early in this role, I assumed "same specifications" meant identical results across vendors. Didn't verify. Turned out an aftermarket "ISO-grade" filter had a different bypass valve setting than the OEM spec—close enough to fit, different enough to matter in cold-start conditions. We caught it before it reached a customer, but it changed my process permanently.
For safety-critical parts, my rule is simple: buy OEM, or only accept aftermarket parts with full traceability—test certificates, material certifications, batch numbers, and a documented manufacturing process that matches the original design intent. Not just "compatible." Certified compatible.
The same logic applies whether you're buying a road roller OEM part or a paver hydraulic component. A failure that injures an operator, or lets a roller move on a slope, is a risk no price difference justifies. If a supplier is vague about documentation, that's a red flag. Reputable aftermarket manufacturers happily share test data. If they can't, treat it as a no.
Scenario 3: Paid-Off Machine, Wear Item — Aftermarket Can Make Sense
This is the situation most actual buying decisions involve. The machine is paid off, it's out of warranty, and you're replacing wear items: filters, wear plates, scrapers, grader blades, paver screed plates, conveyor sections, hoses.
For these, the blanket claim that "OEM is always better" isn't supported by what I've seen in parts inspection. Over the years, I've tested aftermarket wear plates that wore 20% faster than OEM—and private-label plates that outperformed OEM by a noticeable margin. The difference isn't the sticker. It's the steel grade, the heat treatment, and the manufacturer's quality control. That's the truth about paver OEM vs private label: the label alone doesn't decide performance.
That said, "aftermarket" covers a pretty wide range. I can only speak to the premium brands on our approved vendor list, not the no-name budget imports. My experience is based on mid-size fleets in North America and Australia, so if you're sourcing in a different market, your results can vary. The principle still holds: when the component isn't safety-critical and the machine is out of warranty, the cost of failure is low enough that quality aftermarket parts are worth a serious look.
Before you commit to bomag aftermarket parts, check four things:
- Filter specs, not just "fits your machine." Compare micron rating, burst pressure, and bypass valve setting to the OEM specification in your parts manual. Filter efficiency is measured under ISO 16889, the multi-pass test standard. If a supplier can't provide test data, ask—or walk away.
- Material grade for wear parts. For scraper blades or bolt-on wear plates, get hardness and material grade in writing. A few points of hardness can halve—or double—the service life.
- Manufacturer identity. Who actually made it? A brand that publishes its own test data and honors a warranty is different from a repackaged import with no address.
- Return policy. Even verified parts occasionally don't work out. A supplier with a reasonable return policy is surprisingly rare in this industry.
I've seen asphalt paver wholesale deals go wrong for exactly this reason: the buyer chased the lowest unit price and skipped the verification steps. It took me about three years and a few hundred inspected orders to understand the right frame. "OEM vs private label" is not the real question. The real question is whether the part meets the performance spec—and whether the supplier can prove it. The label matters less than the evidence.
Scenario 4: The Counter-Intuitive One — Old Machine, But It's Your Money-Maker
This is where popular advice gets it wrong. A lot of people assume that once a road roller or paver is old and paid off, you should buy the cheapest parts that fit. In my experience, that's the most expensive advice you can follow.
Scenario 3 applies when the machine is a backup or occasional-use unit. But if your old Bomag compactor runs 2,000+ hours a year, or your paver is why you can bid on work at all, the part price is noise compared to downtime.
Run the math. When the paver is down, your crew is still getting paid, the asphalt truck is waiting, and the GC has already lost patience. One hour of that covers the price difference between OEM and an unproven private-label part. A few hundred dollars is a rounding error against a full shift of stand-by time.
And if a cheap filter starves a hydraulic pump and causes a several-thousand-dollar failure, no one is going to congratulate you on the $80 you saved. I've been on the wrong side of that calculation, so I'll say it plainly: when a machine earns revenue every day, your objective isn't minimizing part cost. It's maximizing the probability that the part survives to the next service interval. OEM is the safe baseline. If you buy aftermarket, choose a brand whose performance you've actually tracked—not one that simply shows up first in a web search.
Bottom line: reliability is revenue. On your primary machines, factor that into the purchase price.
How to Know Which Scenario You're In
If you're not sure which situation applies, work through these four questions.
- Is the machine under warranty or a lease agreement? If yes → Scenario 1. Use genuine Bomag parts and verify your contract language.
- Could a sudden failure injure someone or cause major equipment damage? If yes → Scenario 2. Buy OEM, or an aftermarket equivalent with complete documentation.
- Is the machine fully paid off and used as a backup or occasional unit? If yes → Scenario 3. Quality aftermarket parts are acceptable, but verify the specs listed above.
- Is this machine running high hours and critical to your revenue? If yes → Scenario 4. Prioritize reliability over sticker price, even on wear items.
If you don't know where a part stands, ask the dealer. Not over the phone—get it in writing. A one-email question can save you from a denied claim later.
One last caveat: my experience is limited to mid-to-large contractors using Bomag compaction equipment and major-brand pavers in North America and Australia. If you're running a small fleet in a remote region where genuine part availability is slow, the balance changes. A verified local alternative might be better than letting a safety-critical machine sit idle and miss a contract window. Your constraint is different, so your decision should be different too.
But for most situations, the four scenarios above will guide you well. Be cautious of anyone selling a universal rule. "Never buy aftermarket" and "aftermarket is always just as good" are both slogans, not strategies. The honest answer is that the right choice depends on your machine, your component, and your cost of failure.
